The British Board Brings Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ A TV-MA Rating Because… Brits

Did somebody say TV-MA? Yep, it’s happening. Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix will be bringing in some robust gory violence (yay) into Hell’s Kitchen.

The series received the rating by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) who gave it the age appropriation of 15 for “strong bloody violence” for the first three episodes. Which means, for us Americans, that this rating falls in-between a PG-13 and R rating. This also translates that Daredevil might have similar sex and profanity that we know and love in some of our Netflix original favorites like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black (but of course, with a much more who’s ‘the villain/hero vibe’ and action packed fighting, duh!). Series showrunner Steven S. DeKnight previously stated that it would be less violent than Spartacus but (thankfully) more than S.H.I.E.L.D. “We call it PG-16. We don’t quite get to R, but we kiss right up to it,” DeKnight stated about the rating.

Fans should not be disappointed, and I for one will not be either as this is shaping up to be a very good April for Netflix binge-watching. DeKnight also revealed the show’s tone will be inspired by The Wire and classic 70s cop movies. Couldn’t have picked a better motive for a blind acrobatic martial arts superhero.

Netflix released the official poster for the Marvel series, which shows the rating is the ‘bloody’ truth. We can’t help thinking how gore-tastic it is! I mean all blood aside, the poster really is setting the bar high for its darker appeal.

Fans should not be disappointed with the show’s poster foreshadow spilling onto the surface of Charlie Cox’s face. On a side note, Cox’s battered look and smirk really sealed the deal for me (Stardust forever, am I right?). Daredevil will air on April 10th with 13 episodes on Netflix. Here’s a little sneak peak and some needed imagination, as the first three episode titles revealed did not come with a synopsis.

Marvel’s Daredevil episode 1.1, “Into the Ring” The episode stars Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Rosario Dawson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ayelet Zurer, Bob Gunton, Toby Leonard Moore and is directed by Phil Abraham.
